Transportation that opens opportunity

Non-emergency transportation for various destinations is provided by Hancock County Senior Services, Inc., (HCSSI) for county residents 60 years of age and over and by Hancock Area Rural Transit (HART) for residents under 60 years of age. Vehicles are available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments outside these hours will be considered according to driver availability. Wheelchair transportation is also available. Appointments are scheduled first come-first served. Call as early as possible, so the Dispatcher can reserve a time for you. Seniors age 60 and over, ride to essential destinations with HCSSI transportation for a donation. Those under 60 years of age ride with HART for a nominal fare. Seniors can also ride with HART to non-essential destinations for a nominal fee.

Homemaker

Our staff provides housekeeping assistance to seniors and the disabled who need part-time help with household tasks, such as laundry, meal preparation, and cleaning.

Outreach & Insurance Information

Staff provides assistance in accessing appropriate social services programs, writing bill payments and balancing checkbooks. They also assist with filing SC-40 Indiana Tax Credit forms and energy assistance programs and applications. Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) trained staff and volunteers will research and provide insurance and Medicare Part D information through the Outreach Program.

Respite & Assisted Care

Staff provides respite to relieve a regular caregiver by providing non-medical, in-home supervision to frail seniors or disabled. Assistance is also provided to individuals who need help with activities of daily living. A nominal fee is charged for this service.

Handyman

Our handyman provides lawn mowing, snow removal, yard maintenance, and minor home repair and builds wheelchair ramps.

Telephone Reassurance

Volunteers make telephone calls to isolated, frail seniors or the disabled. Many older adults who live alone find it reassuring to know that someone is checking on them. Individuals may be matched with a client for one-on-one visitation. Groups may also work on special projects like painting, carpet cleaning or leaf removal.

Volunteer Services

Volunteers provide companionship and assistance with daily household personal management to reduce social isolation. Groups also provide special projects.

Information & Referral

The agency has trained personnel who will answer questions about services and community resources and will assist with the appropriate referrals.
